IRLWEBUK Project

What is the IRLWEBUK Project?

The IRLWEBUK Project is based on the WordPress open source ‘blogging software’. It was developed by the Celtic and Irish Cultural Society with enormous thanks to the WordPress Team and Patricia Muller who originally created the look of these webpages. It allows any web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox to update content from anywhere in the world.

Its sole purpose is to allow community groups to access and update its own content without needing to know how to layout HTML or XML pages. Don’t know what this means? That’s kind of the point.

What does it do?
The Celtic and Irish Cultural Society website first launched in 2004 and has had two major redesigns. Redesigns were needed because each time a page was updated another also had to be updated with new links. It soon became a lot of work. The new system with dynamically update content. It is the same type of web system used by the BBC, RTE and a host of major media sites.

The IRLWEBUK project and WordPress updates pages dynamically meaning that once a new page is added, the other pages automatically update.

If a redesign were to be needed in future, the content of the website would be unaffected. It will make things much easier to move with the times.

Who is it for?
Community and voluntary groups who lack experience with IT but who would easily be able to use something like Hotmail and for groups that would like to update content on a regular basis. It suits novices but also the additional features that Web 2.0 has to offer such as syndicated feeds (updated news content on your Google homepage for example).

It has been been designed with the UK’s Irish Voluntary sector in mind but anyone could use it.

Is it finished?
Yes and no. County Brighton were the first group to go live with a full IRLWEBUK site. The Celtic and Irish Cultural Society site remains a combination of static webpages and dynamic content.

The most important thing about the project is that it should be ready “straight out of the box” and should be as simple to use as possible. The Celtic and Irish Cultural Society are working closely with County Brighton to test the IRLWEBUK format so that it can be easily replicated on additional sites.

There are currently two versions for the IRLWEBUK project (although visitors won’t notice a difference). We are working to bring both versions to completion.
