Easter 1916

Neil Jordan’s film “Michael Collins” begins its story with the Easter Rising of 1916. The uprising was a cataclysmic event in Irish history: an attempt by Irish Nationalists to invoke the 1912 Home Rule Bill that had never been implemented but the insurrection ended almost as soon as it began.

Bloody Sunday: November 21 1920

Amid the War of Independence / Anglo-Irish War, 1919-1921; the political situation in Ireland was volatile following Sinn Fein’s decision to set-up an alternative parliament from London. The Westminster government responded by sending auxiliary forces to Dublin, referred to as the Black and Tans.
